A New Creation

in Daily Recovery Devotional by Unforced Rhythms

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here!”  2 Corinthians 5:17

Why is it so hard for us to believe?  The bible says it loud and clear!  Are we insane?  Or did we just go through a rough patch in our lives?  As a newcomer, we went back and forth with this dilemma in our heads.  Still today, we get that lingering thought that maybe, just maybe, we weren’t so bad.  Maybe we just over-reacted.  Christ wants us to know, to believe, that through him, we can become new again.  Perfect?  No.  Once we believe that Christ can restore us, it does not mean that we need to forget the past.  We can use our past experiences to help another who may be in need.  We cannot dwell on the past though.  We have to focus on today!  If we are dwelling on the past, we are blocking the sunlight of the spirit and we are of no use to Christ.

Once the devil realizes that we have been released of the obsession of our addiction, he no longer comes at us with drink in hand, links to pornography, or triple chocolate cheesecake.  The devil knows that we have learned to watch out for what is in front of us; he knows that we have friends/accountability partners/sponsors that are watching our back side; so he tries to come at us from the sides.  He tells us that it is ok to let that old behavior come back, because we are not drinking, not binging, not being unfaithful.  We are sober!!  We can tell little lies here and there, we don’t have to make a gratitude list daily, we really don’t need to spend time with God EVERYDAY anymore.  Little by little, that drink will not sound too bad after all.  We deserve it, right?  But, we are a new creation, the new is here!  As God restores us to sanity, we will be able to catch those little defects of character.  We will be able to use the past to help others and not an excuse to feel sorry for ourselves.  Our past will not define who we are, yes it is part of who we are, but God’s plan for us is not over.

“I have been crucified by Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.  The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”  Galatians 2:20

Dear God, thank you so much for dying on the cross for my sins.  Thank you for giving me the willingness to be restored in you.  Please allow me to use my past experience as a tool to help others, not as a crutch to receive pity.  Please help me to focus on today so that I can be of maximum usefulness to you.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
