Freed By The Truth

“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8: 31-32
M Scott Peck wrote that “Sanity is total commitment to the truth” and “Sanity is dedication to reality at all costs”. Any time that we try to deny, avoid or ignore the truth we are not sane. To be committed to truth completely and wholeheartedly is to be sane, whole and free.
Most of us come from families that regularly denied the truth. We may have grown up with ”Nice families don’t air their dirty laundry”. “If only you kids would behave then I wouldn’t have to drink”. ”Let’s not talk about what happened, its in the past and doesn’t matter now” but the TRUTH is that it-what ever IT was- does matter. Lies, deceptions and half truths are the norm, not only in our families but throughout our culture. Politicians deny or put the best spin on their moral failings, celebrities blame pressure and stress for their addictions, whole governments do everything they can to suppress the truth in order to stay in power and in control, it seems the whole world avoids and denies the truth.
Christ tells us that to know the truth, and therefore sanity, we must hold on to his teachings. We can’t know his teachings until we are disciplined about studying his word. The very word “disciple” means “one who is disciplined”. Jesus goes on to tell us that knowing and embracing the truth will set us free. Looking at the truth will be uncomfortable and even painful at times, but its worth it! The freedom Jesus promises is a life that fulfills the purpose that God has for us. Then we will not be constrained and molded into the insanity of this world. The twelve steps as practiced in Christ centered recovery are a process by which we can face and accept the truth about ourselves, our families, our hurts and habits. We learn the truth of God’s perfect love and how to practice his truth and his love in our day to day lives and we find what it means to be happy, joyful, sane and free.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are living by the truth. 3 John 1:4
Jesus, I want to be a true disciple, your word is truth, the truth I need to live by to be free and sane, I want to know you and myself better, reveal your truth to me as I walk this journey through the twelve steps.
