Insanely Hungry
in Daily Recovery Devotional by Unforced Rhythms
The young man became so hungry that even the slop he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything. “When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! Luke 15: 16-17
When we turn our backs on God and decide to go it alone, we turn away from the spiritual food he nourishes us with. We seeks to fill the hunger in our souls with something, ANYTHING. Even the slop fit only for pigs looks good to us. When we are deep into self, our fleshly nature rules over us and we forget that we three part beings, body, mind and spirit. We focus only on filling the needs and wants of our flesh. Our passions can drive us to behave like animals, gluttonous and lustful to consume all we can, or we desire to be the “big dog” and rule and control over all those around us. When we lose ourselves and our minds over to our fleshly passions, all compassion is lost. We lose the ability to connect with God and others, and we become totally self absorbed animals.
The progression of disease can be subtle or sudden. When the person who struggles with pornography really looks at his behavior he is often shocked and appalled at the level of debauchery his addiction has taken him to, from seemingly innocent viewing of swimsuit models, to disgusting, perverted images that degrade, dehumanize and violate others. The compulsive eater is blown away when they finally tally the amount of junk food consumed on a binge and then multiply that by the number of binges. The drug addict has a moment of clarity and realizes he has lied to and stolen from ever single person that has tried to love him. The controlling codependent finally faces up to the fact that she sucks the life out of all those around her with impossible demands and expectations that no human could ever meet up to. When we “come to our senses” as the prodigal did in the parable we realize how spiritually starved we are and how far we have strayed from God and we come to believe that He alone can satisfy our hunger and restore us to sanity.
Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness. 1 Peter 2: 2 -3
Lord Jesus, the physical things of this world will never satisfy me. Only you can nourish my spirit and save me from my fleshly passions. You did not make me merely an animal, but you gave me the gift of a soul and a spirit that hungers for you. Nourish me and fill me with your Holy Spirit.
