The Roadmap

Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air.  1 Corinthians 9:26

Before coming to recovery many of us wandered through life aimlessly.  We didn’t have a road map for life and many times got lost or stuck.  Many of us felt like we were viewing life through a window.  We watched as others appeared to have a purpose in life.  What was our purpose?  Why did it seem like we were always stuck and fighting an unseen enemy.

Recovery is a spiritual battle. Especially for Christians.  The enemy does not want us to have purpose and hope.  In Christ centered recovery we stop running aimlessly.  We stop swinging our fist at unseen enemies.  We stop leaning on our own understanding.  We learn to listen to others, to follow direction.  We learn that it’s okay to not know everything and to be teachable.  We come to believe that Christ can restore us to the good race and will be with us till the end of that race.

In Christ centered recovery we have a roadmap.  The twelve steps that came the Beatitudes.  The Beatitudes are Christ’s first sermon and the cornerstone of his ministry.  Christ gave us a roadmap.  He knew that we were lost and could not find our way on our own.  So he gave us the eight Beatitudes and died on the cross so that we would no longer have to live our lives with no meaning.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.  John 10:10

Father God, thank you for the direction you have set out before me.  You give me purpose and meaning.  Through your son Jesus I have a new life.  A life filled with promise, hope and joy.  Thank you for the gift of the beatitudes and for Jesus dying on the cross so that I may have life.  My life and my will is yours.  I will continue to run the good race until the end with the roadmap that Jesus gave me.
